Theo Epstein’s trade booty

Theo Epstein has made 27 trades in a row in which the return has been only one player.

In four of those 27 trades Epstein has given up multiple players.

The last time the Red Sox received multiple players in a deal was when the Red Sox acquired Coco Crisp, David Riske and Josh Bard from the Indians on 1/27/2006. That was also Epstein’s first trade after leaving the team for 79 days because of distrust in Larry Lucchino.

The previous longest stretch of consecutive trades in which Epstein only received one player in return was 14, a streak that started with trading Rene Miniel for Lou Merloni and ended with the trade of Nomar Garciaparra.

Red Sox sign Brad Wilkerson

MLBTradeRumors breaks the deal: www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/02/red-sox-sign-br.html

MLBTR has learned tonight that the Red Sox have signed outfielder Brad Wilkerson to a minor league deal with roster and playing time incentives. Wilkerson, 31, hit .220/.308/.326 in 309 plate appearances for the Mariners and Blue Jays in 2008. The Ms signed Wilkerson last year for $3MM but designated him for assignment before May.

Baseball-Reference stats: www.baseball-reference.com/w/wilkebr01.shtml

Theo Epstein is just throwing something against the wall hoping to catch lighting in a bottle. Wilk was a Godly on-base and power performer in 2002-04, while 2006-08 were miserable.

Coco Crisp traded to KC for Ramon Ramirez

WHB 810 in Kansas City reported this morning that the Red Sox have traded Coco Crisp to the Royals for relief pitcher Ramon Ramirez. It may not be finalized, but it seems to be a done deal according to multiple KC reporters.

Ramon Ramirez in 2007:

G IP ERA WHIP FIP xERA ERC BABIP LOB% BR/9 H/9 HR/9 K/9 BB/9 K/BB
71 71.7 2.64 1.23 2.78 2.58 2.56 .286 76% 11.0 7.2 0.3 8.8 3.9 2.3

Very, very nice young back of the bullpen arm with electric stuff. Plus we control him for many seasons. He throws a mid-90s fastball, power slider and hard changeup.

Of course this move means we will have to get a 4th outfielder, hopefully Rocco Baldelli is in play.

Good News on Beckett, Ross Called Up

Terry Francona said this afternoon that Josh Beckett’s visit to Dr. Andrews in Alabama went well and all tests came back clean.  Beckett was put on the DL but is already slated to pitch next Friday.

With the open roster spot the Red Sox called up catcher David Ross, who was to be called up when the rosters expanded on September 1st anyways.  This move allows more maneuverability with pinch hitters/runners in this weekend’s series against the White Sox.

Red Sox Ink David Ross

According to Ken Rosenthal the Red Sox have signed recently waived catcher David Ross to a minor league contract. This would seem to indicate that he will be given every opportunity to be the third catcher in September and possibly make the postseason roster if needed.

Ross has decent catching skills and intriguing offensive abilities. He has never hit for average, but has shown power and on-base ability. Between 2006-07 he smacked 38 homers and has a .381 OBP in 154 at-bats this season.

He will report to AAA Pawtucket for now.

Red Sox sign Ryan Westmoreland

After sliding to the 5th round of the draft due to signability issues, the Red Sox have signed outfielder Ryan Westmoreland of Rhode Island today.  Westmoreland will be passing on a baseball scholarship to Vanderbilt. Playing for the Bayside Yankees this summer Westmoreland hit .557 with 4 HR and an insane 15/3 BB/K ratio.

Today is the deadline to sign players.

Some of the big names that the Red Sox hope to sign today are Peter Hissey, Kyle Stroup, Ricky Oropesa and Navery Moore. In these final hours before the deadline it looks like prized pitcher Alex Meyer is heading to college.

Update: Westmoreland received $2 million. Peter Hissey has signed for $1 million. Tyler Wilson, Colby Cervenka, Carson Blair and Kyle Stroup were also signed before the deadline.

Quotes From Theo Epstien, Terry Francona and Jason Bay

Cross posted from my post at Sons of Sam Horn.  Epstein and Francona threw some zingers at the Ramirez camp, but were graceful for all he did for the Red Sox. They emphasized it is now time for the “team” to play to it’s potential.

Jason Bay sounded confident and poised in front of a packed room of media members. Something tells me he is going to be a huge fan favorite.

Theo Epstein:

“Given the totality of the circumstances it was absolutely the right thing to do. We need to talk about the team, no pointing fingers, things were real, not just imagined.”

“This put us in the best possible position to make the playoffs, do damage in the playoffs, going forward, and standing for something, we just had a meeting and it’s now 25 guys that feel like a team.”

“Very reminiscent of 2004, crazy day, many different versions died and this happened with seconds to go. Tito, ownership, baseball ops all were in agreement.”

“Delay in announcement was because MLB computers crashed, the paper work was not finished and we didn’t announce until it was.”

“Undeniable that the environment was not conducive to winning, we wanted to change that, and we did that with a good baseball trade.”

“We are not looking to catch lightning in a bottle, we have the best run differential in the American League. We only need to get back to being a team and stop underperforming.”

“We put nothing on the back burner working on the Manny trade, there was just nothing we could accomplish in this market. The trade we made was the most pressing issue.”

“No second thoughts, but ahead of time we put 2nd, 3rd and 4th thoughts into the deal before we did it. We decided it was the right thing to do.”

“We met with Manny and all his different representatives. We were always honest, even if its not what they wanted to hear.”

“We didn’t make this trade because of last week, it’s a longer story than that. We will listen on every trade offer for any player.”

“Bay’s makeup is good because he knows who he is and will not try to change how he plays or acts. He can be productive in any environment. NO GUARANTEES with a small sample size over a couple of months though, Bay will be productive though. He wants to play in a pennant race.”

“We only ask him to be a contributing member of the baseball team, emphasis on team.”

“Remarkably consistent outside of last year, but injuries and other things explain that.”

“Not many guys this winter would have fit the LF spot in 2009.”

“Manny run was remarkable, key part of 2 World Series teams, no one will take that away. We wish him well, but it is now in the past.”

Terry Francona:

“Exciting in the meeting a while ago, it was a good feeling.”

“At some point we want Ellsbury leading off and the lineup can change.”

“I’ve barley met Bay, I am not going to make up next week’s lineup tonight. Things could change though.”

“The trade: I was pleased, very pleased. All I care about is the team and I feel very good about that today.”

“Moss, great opportunity. Watching him learning is good. We are pleased that he can play, we hope he does real good.”

“Hansen, not perfect in his time here but he will get a different opportunity now. I hope he runs with it.”

“Mental peace? ARE YOU QUOTING MANNY? HAHAHA. We just want to go about our business of winning. We reminded ourselves of that today”

“Hiding my giddiness? What are you guys talking about? I didn’t look over the Dodgers matchups this morning, I looked at the A’s, I don’t care about the Dodgers.”

“This is not a short term jolt of energy, it’s a long term thing. Today was just the right time to talk to the team.”

Jason Bay:

“Whirlwind, sleepless, but for a good reason.”

“I followed the same way everyone else did, at the end it seemed like nothing was goign to happen, but I’m happy.”

“I couldn’t have picked a better place if I was a free agent than Boston, I couldn’t have hand picked a better place.”

“I’m wearing 44, Eric Davis was an idol of mine.”

“Everyone has been nice, everyone trying to help me out at the airport! Best fans in baseball, I can’t wait to be part of the home team.”

“Last year was a down year, no excuses, I played though injuries and it just didn’t work.”

“I know people will compare me to Manny, I was traded to Pitt for Giles, I am just going to go play the game.”

“I remember in Boston everyone was singing Sweet Caroline, I know it is stupid, but I liked it, the atmosphere, I wanted to be here.”

“I am looking forward to a lot less running, PNC was huge behind me. Fenway looks like it will be great for me offensive and defensively.”

“Man, there are a lot of reporters in here.”

“How weird this may be, my dad was a huge Red Sox fan, I grew up with Yaz and Rice posters on my wall. They are still in the house.”

Manny Ramirez Traded To Dodgers

According to both NESN and CNNSI.com

It is expected that Jason Bay is going to end up with the Red Sox in a last minute 3-way trade.

Ramirez’s 7 and a half year run with the Red Sox is over.

Update 5:12pm:

Red Sox: Jason Bay

Dodgers: Manny Ramirez and $7m from the Red Sox

Pirates: Brandon Moss, Craig Hansen, Andy LaRoche and Bryan Morris

Losing Moss means nothing to me, Hansen is a little more concerning, but I not going to get me down. The bigger issue is that we apparently did nothing to acquire a bullpen arm and that has been the weakest link to our team this year… Pretty disturbing.

Red Sox Trade SS Christian Lara to Dodgers for RP Eric Hull

Last week the Los Angeles Dodgers designated relief pitcher Eric Hull for assignment; today he has been traded to the Red Sox for single-A shortstop Christian Lara and cash considerations.

The right-hander Hull has only 6.2 major league innings under his belt as he enters his age 28 season. In 146.2 IP in AAA he has accumulated these rate stats:

0.6 HR/9
4.7 BB/9
10.2 K/9
2.2 K/BB

[Though those numbers were better in his 65.2 IP last season, 3.1 K/BB, 11.1 K/9]

While his strikeout numbers are obviously good, his control issues seem to make him someone Theo Epstein would usually avoid, especially for an older player.

I think this trade is more about getting the best deal we could for Lara, who was in a fight for playing time with more highly regarded middle infield prospects.

Lara is a good fielding shortstop but never developed the contact or on-base skills needed to make him a real prospect because of his lack of power.
